Edita Food Industries belongs to Egypt, selling a range of bakery related items and sweets under 11 different brands. The company has expanded its operations beyond Egyptian market, venturing in other North African regions and Middle East. The PESTLE analysis of Edita below gives an overview of the industry dynamics that company is dealing with and the effect.

PESTLE Analysis of Edita

The below section covers the external analysis of Edita using the PESTLE analysis framework. The external factors include political, economic, social, technological, Legal and environmental forces which could have positive or negative impact on food industry.

Political Factors

Egypt has faced political issues in the form of major political upheaval in 2013, followed by instances of attacks on security personnel, creating a volatile situation for Edita. The continuation of violent activities in the country threatens the smooth operations of the company as the management has to navigate through the high level of uncertainty.
Another challenge was in the form of Russia and Ukraine war that created disruption in the food supply, which effected the business’s ability to manage its supply chain. Edita has to deal with the disrupted supply of raw materials, specifically supply of and oil from Russia, along with the internal food supply issues in the country.

Furthermore, major political factor is the presence of food cartels that disrupt the food industry. Companies such as Edita are likely to be effected by the supply chain instability instigated by the actions of such entities. In one instance, the sugar stock of the company has been seized to address the issue of hoarding of the commodity which led to temporary suspension of production (Knecht, 2016).

Political factors for the company also include laws related to tax which need to be diligently followed by the organization. Another aspect of government’s point of view is reflected in the form of trading regulations which have a direct effect on the performance of Edita Food. Favorable trading ties facilitate the company in gaining access to the required material with ease.

Economic Factors

Poor economic performance of a country effects different sectors of the region, as the uncertainty impacts the cash flow as well as the ratio of generated revenue. The economy of Egypt has been performing well, having a high growth rate of GDP, which is a positive indicator for Edita. There has been some disruption in the economic stability though.

However, the recent economic disruption in the form of inflation and the hike in prices of raw materials such as wheat and oil has negatively affected the company. Inflation does not lead to high prices of material required for manufacturing of the range of products but also lead to increased prices of bakery items and sweets which are being supplied by the organization.

An evident example of the effect of inflation is the significant decrease in the profits earned by the company, which was estimated to be around 80% (Farouk, 2017). The current economic situation is further complicated by the devaluation of currency, which adds to the financial crunch being experienced by Edita, as some of the raw materials are bought from the US.

Social Factors

The growing population is one of the social factors of Egypt provides a positive environment for the business as the increase in young population is linked with higher demand of the bakery items (Edita, 2022). The company has tapped the potential of the young target market by managing direct supply of its products to the educational institutions.

The preference of the target market is the driving force behind the business decisions of Edita, which effects different components ranging from product packaging to taste. An example of focusing on consumer need, is using creative packaging to appeal to the consumer taste by offering croissants in packaged form. This product design was favorably viewed by the people.

Edita has faced a shift in buying pattern of its target market during the pandemic which has caused a lower profitability. In response to the lower sales during Covid-19, the management has decided to bring in some new products in the market, which were at a higher price to deal with the financial pressure of low sales across its existing product ranges.

Technological Factors

The use of up-to-date technology is essential for the business operations of the company. It enables the personnel to fulfil the quality standards while maintaining efficient production process. The company has expanded its operations by including latest technology which helps in producing larger batches of products, enhancing the production of bakery goods up to 20%.

The use of digitizing has been particularly useful for the company as it was able to gather real time information and use it for decision making, along with the implementation of SAP. Edita has also included digital payment option and e-invoice, bringing ease to the purchase experience and converting these processes to digital version (Edita, 2022).

Legal Factors

There are various laws that are applicable on Edita Foods, which needs to be focused upon by the management. Occupational health and safety laws are one such example, and the company has made significant reduction in workplace related injuries by offering training to its personnel. Moreover, firefighting systems have been put in place in accordance to the legal framework.

The management also needs to follow the labor laws including worker wages, benefits, payment of taxes etc. are implemented across the organization. The contracts with the suppliers, lease agreements and acquisition processes are also managed under the legal framework. For instance, the acquisition of Fancy Foods has been carried out following the related legal requisites.

Environmental Factors

The notion of environmental protection is one of the focal points for the management, which is evident through the different eco-friendly measured adopted in the organization. Efforts have been made to reduce GHG emissions, along with emphasis on improving the water management system at the company. The management also intends to bring a 10% decrease in water wastage (Edita, 2021).

Conclusion

Edita is operation in a moderate favorable environment, as its macro-environment factors create a blend of positive and negative forces. The political and economic pressures create challenges for the company, while the developing market, expanding youth segment and implementation of technology are variables that support the company in achieving high sales and revenues.

Danaher Corporation is based in United States and is included among the top 200 fortune companies. It is a part of the global science and technology industry focusing on the development of diagnostic tools and engaged in scientific research on drugs. The following section will be covering the PESTLE Analysis of Danaher.

Political Factors

The political factors have a strong influence on the financial performance and growth prospects of an organization. A stable political environment supports ease of doing business and allows the companies to engage in procurement and distribution processes without any significant obstacles. Due to political instability, the procurement and distribution processes are disrupted.

One of the factors that had a profound effect on Danaher was the war between Russia and Ukraine, which translated into changes in business operations of the company in the war inflicted territory. The range of products supplied to the region were limited to medical products used for treatment of patients and vaccination, leading to less than 1% sales in Russia (Danaher, 2022).

It has been stated that more than 50% of the sales achieved by the organization are attributed to the non-US entities, therefore, geopolitical conflict carries significant implications for the company. Some of the implications of the political uncertainty originating out of the Russian conflict, is the pretax charge of $43 million, in addition to the supply disruption of natural gas by Russia.

Economic Factors

The economic factors such as inflation, GDP, unemployment etc. also play a contributing role in creating environment dynamics for an organization. Positive economic indicators are connected to business growth while economic decline is linked to poor financial performance of organizations.

Economic sanctions impact the way businesses operations are managed, as the sanctions imposed can restrict the import and export of the products. As evident in case of Russian war, the economic sanctions resulted in limiting the supply of medical technology to treatment of the patients. Moreover, laws governing taxation and monetary policies effect the firm’s income.

Danaher is also affected by changes occurring in the economic stability and levels of inflation of a country influence the investment made in the domain of science and technology and also suppresses the demand of the related products. The financial crisis of 2009 for example had led to significant reduction in net income, which fell from 97 cents per share to 92 cents per share (Reuters, 2009).

Inflation can also increase the cost of production which can adversely affect the profit margins and demand of the products being offered by Danaher. As observed in 2022, the increased production cost, combined with the rising freight cost has driven up the financial expenditure required for managing the operations for the conglomerate.

Social Factors

The demand of specific diagnostic tool or treatment approach can shift the production process of the firms in the science and technology segment. The onset of COVID-19 had created an increase in the demand for tools that could help with the diagnosing of the virus. However, the reduction in the number of cases of COVID has lowered the sales volume of the related products (Taylor, 2023).

Another way social factors can affect the production and business development is the emphasis of the consumer on health-related products. As observed during the pandemic, a large number of people were seeking diagnosis and vaccination. With the decline of COVID, people have become less concerned about the pandemic and are investing in other health related tools.

The shift in demographic makeup of the society also influences the demand for products related to biotechnology, diagnostics and life sciences. A rising aging population is likely to experience multiple health issues, requiring medical intervention, which offers Danaher an opportunity for growth.

Technological Factors

The technological advancements such as artificial intelligence and automation have been a significant opportunity for the various segments being managed by Danaher. The experimentation in the biopharmaceutical domain for example has benefited from machine learning as the decisions could be made with more efficiency (Chance, 2023).

The companies being managed under the name of Danaher include scientific research and technology specializations, such as biotechnology and life sciences. Technology is at the core of the business and development of the corporation as the company is focused on development of diagnostic and treatment tools supported through thorough scientific investigation.

Legal Factors

The science and technology industry is operating under the regulations linked to the healthcare regulations. The products that are available in the market need to be approved by the concerned authority, while any issues with the products requires the recall of the faulty items. Acts such as FDC ensure that the medical related products that are available in the market meet the expected standards (Danaher, 2022).

Acquisition process needs to adhere to the legal requirements of the country. Since, Danaher has acquired companies such as Abcam the management has to follow the related requirements. In addition, integration of business units also needs to follow the legal proceedings. The company also needs to respond to intellectual property risks under the provided legal framework.

Environmental Factors

The pressure to reduce the GHG emissions has resulted in the management at Danaher to engage in steps that aim to reduce the emission. By 2032, the company intends to reduce the GHG up to 50%., supporting the pro-environment action plan. Along with that, by 2024, the company has set up the goal to bring 15% decrease in its solid waste to curtail environmental impact (Danaher, 2021).

Conclusion

Danaher has attained success as a global corporation and is among the leading businesses in the science and technology sector. The political instability and economic uncertainty has disrupted the net income of the company, however, demand of its healthcare products and innovative technology has benefited the company to maintain profitability.

Decathlon is a part of the sporting goods retail industry, with the company originating in France in 1976. Over the years, the company has established a significant position in the global sportswear market. The PESTLE analysis of Decathlon details the effect of external environment on business and its subsequent response to these environmental dynamics.

Political Factors

In case of political conflict, the businesses have to pause their operations, resulting in lower sales volume. The Russian attack on Ukraine has created uncertain business environment for Decathlon, making it difficult to carry on smooth operations. Furthermore, the pressure from stakeholders influenced the decision to suspend business activities in the region (Morton, 2022).

The supply chain process of organizations can also be disturbed in case of trading restrictions linked to the geopolitical conflict such as trading issues between the US and China and Russian war. Different restrictions have been applied on Russia amidst the conflict, making the business environment unfeasible, due to issues with the supply chain, which effected Decathlon.

Considering the supply chain issues the company had to face due to the political turbulence, the management has increased focus on local production to offset the impact of uncertainty. Government’s decisions related to tax, interest rates and other policies also affect the way Decathlon’s strategy and operations are shaped.

Economic Factors

The economic factors of a country play a crucial role in production process of an organization. In addition, the economic prosperity or decline also effect the revenues generated by businesses. Stable economy provides organizations with various growth opportunities while negative economic outlook indicates risk factors for business entities.

Factors such as GDP growth and inflation have a strong effect on Decathlon. The company has been facing the adverse impact of inflation and increasing price of raw materials. Since the raw material has become more costly, the company needs to respond to the price changes and lower the negative effect of price increase on the profitability.

The increasing prices of raw material as well as the fuel price hike, due to the Russian conflict has affected the pace of business growth. Nevertheless, having global presence has enabled the company to hold reasonable growth prospects in the next 4 years. At the same time, the management aims to retain low prices for the products, which can be a challenge (Kit, 2022).

COVID-19 had exerted pressure on the economic stability of different regions and various organizations had to pursue with the closure of their operations. Decathlon has faced losses as a result of the pandemic and had to close its outlets that were not significantly contributing to the company revenues.

Social Factors

Taste and preference of people is one of the prime components that constitute the social factors for the sporting goods industry. The design of the products needs to be in accordance to the requirements of the market, while pricing is also determined by the consumer’s mindset. Decathlon focuses on keeping the prices of its products within affordability range.

Moreover, the degree of people adopting active lifestyle in the population open up the possibilities of growth for the business. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of people who are focusing on healthier lifestyle, and incorporating fitness and sports as a part of their life. This change can be beneficial for Decathlon as its customer base can increase.

The sales achieved by the company were also impacted as due to the pandemic, the in-store purchase of sporting goods declined as a large number of people were following the social distancing. On the other hand, the online sales increased as the consumers preferred option for purchase of the goods (Shearsmith, 2022).

Technological Factors

The technological development has facilitated the sporting goods industry as the tools such as automation and AI help with creating quality products. The availability of technology has also been used to come up with unique product design, such as a recyclable ski jacket (Decathlon, 2022). Another example is conversational AI as a part of the customer management system.

Moreover, technology helps Decathlon in the management of warehouse. The level of efficiency has increased, owing to the use of software and robots that help the company in handling the inventory. Managing sales online effectively has also been made possible due to the availability of technology that supports online business.

Decathlon needs to keep up with the pace of evolving technology to handle its product design, distribution and other operational processes. The domain of R&D is particularly supported by the technological developments. Digitalization is at the core of the online presence of the company and the management has incorporated different tools to support seamless customer experience.

Legal Factors

The legal aspects of Decathlon include labor laws and rights, detailed by ILO. The workers employed in the manufacturing facilities need to be treated in accordance to the labor laws such as salary, number of work hours, work safety etc. The management also practices fair labor practiced by discouraging forced and child labor (Decathlon, 2022).

Furthermore, the contractual agreement with the suppliers and management of company subsidiaries needs to be handled under the legal framework. Another notable legal guideline for Decathlon is the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). This entails that the products displayed on the shelves need to be removed once they are near expiry.

Environmental Factors

The environmental concerns have played an important role in shaping the business operations and product design at Decathlon. From the emphasis on product recyclability to reduction of waste, the company has been committed to lower its impact on the environment. ECODYE is one such component that has helped it to achieve environment friendly manufacturing (Decathlon, 2022).

Along with recycling, minimal waste design has also been the focal point at Decathlon. In addition, decreasing emissions during production process has also been a part of the sustainable endeavors at the company. The management has also limited the use of plastic in packaging, eliminating the plastic use for majority of its product categories.

Conclusion

Decathlon has faced pressure from the external environment in the form of geo-political conflict and pandemic, which had adverse effect on company sales. The managerial decisions have been guided by the influence of these threats from the environment. The growth opportunities in the form of technology upgrades have benefited the sporting goods manufacturer.

The insurance industry is a critical part of the global economy, providing protection and security to individuals and businesses. However, the industry operates in a complex and dynamic environment, facing numerous challenges and opportunities. To navigate this environment successfully, companies in the insurance sector must conduct a PESTEL analysis to understand the political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal factors that influence their operations. This article going to explore the key findings of a PESTEL analysis of insurance industry and their implications for the future of the sector.

Political factors

PESTEL analysis of the insurance business shows that political influences shape its future. Government laws affect the industry politically. Governments worldwide regulate insurance to protect consumers and promote fair competition. In some nations, including the US, new government regulations might limit insurers’ revenue or require them to cover specific risks. International trade accords have given insurers cross-border benefits but also raised competition from overseas enterprises. Geopolitical instability has disrupted and cost insurers worldwide.

Another major difficulty for stakeholders is universal healthcare coverage. Private insurers may lose money or go bankrupt if more countries implement public health care. Environmentalist advocacy could also lower pollution-related clients’ premiums (Gnatzy & Moser, 2012). In conclusion, knowing how these varied political forces interact within and across markets sheds light on current insurance industry dangers and opportunities.

Economic factors

The insurance industry, like any other sector, is constantly influenced by several external factors that shape and determine its market performance. One of the crucial aspects to consider while conducting a PESTEL analysis of the insurance industry is the economic factor. Economic factors such as inflation rates, interest rates, taxation policies, and changes in GDP strongly impact this industry’s growth potential. The current COVID-19 pandemic has also disrupted global financial markets and brought about unprecedented challenges for insurers worldwide. Insurers are experiencing significant disruptions across their investments portfolios due to turbulent financial environments resulting from low-interest rates and uncertainty in equity markets.

In addition, rising healthcare costs have significantly raised claim payments among health insurers leading to premium hikes on medical coverage products offered by these companies. As a result, more people may be reluctant or unable to purchase those policies; hence reducing overall demand for these products in economic terms. To counteract these economic impacts on their businesses’ position and continue growing during uncertain times insures must evaluate how macroeconomic factors affect them over time

Social factors

The social factors have a profound influence on the success and sustainability of the insurance industry. One crucial factor that has recently emerged is demographic changes, which include aging populations and millennials’ changing demands for insurance products based on their digital lifestyles. For instance, aging populations indicate increased demand for life insurance policies as more people seek to protect their beneficiaries from financial hardships upon death.

In contrast, millennials often prioritize custom-tailored experiences that align with their lifestyle needs over traditional blanket offerings. Additionally, cultural norms such as increasing societal awareness around health and wellness increase demand for health insurance products.

Technological Factors

Technology changes many industries, including insurance. AI has revolutionized this industry. AI systems are more correctly analyzing client data and danger. Machine learning algorithms can swiftly detect fraudulent claims, saving insurers and their clients’ money. With the increased usage of mobile devices and internet access, insurers are using digital channels to interact with clients.

Online portals give policyholders more control and real-time claim updates (Barbara et al., 2017). Innovative technologies like telematics sensors in vehicles allow insurers to collect valuable driving data that can be used for personalized pricing or safety interventions, a trend known as usage-based insurance (UBI). These technological advances offer great opportunities to increase efficiency in the insurance industry, but they also present significant challenges in areas like privacy and cybersecurity that policymakers must address.

Environmental factors

The insurance sector, like any other industry, is greatly influenced by environmental factors that play a vital role in shaping its growth and development. These factors fall under the PESTEL framework, which encompasses political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal aspects of an industry.

In this context, focusing on the environmental aspect highlights how ecological concerns impact the operations and profitability of insurers worldwide. Insurance companies have to bear the brunt of negative environmental impacts such as global warming resulting from climate change events leading to natural disasters including hurricanes or tornadoes causing huge losses for insured parties.

Such occurrences lead not only lead to financial burden but regulatory issues for these companies who must adhere to strict policies set forth by statutory authorities when compensating victims of environmentally-induced hazards or risks; failing which lawsuits could further damage their reputation thereby affecting their bottom line.

Additionally long-term payouts related to life insurance are also affected in areas prone to smoke pollution because it can impact human health leading loss prevention settlement costs often accompanied by costly litigation processes again negatively impacting profits.

Legal Factors

PESTEL legal factors help insurance businesses understand their external environment. Insurers face risks and possibilities from the changing regulatory landscape. New laws or regulations may demand underwriting or product adjustments, which can severely effect insurance business. Insurers must also assess litigation risk because lawsuits and settlements can hurt their bottom line. Intellectual property law also protects insurers’ sensitive information and technology assets from copycats and thieves (Kampanje, 2014).

Employment law also affects insurance corporations’ performance by regulating workforce management decisions including hiring, remuneration, and employee relations. Understanding these legal factors can help insurers avoid risks and comply with rules. This awareness also ensures organizations follow ethical standards without violating regulations, resulting in long-term company prosperity.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the PESTEL analysis of the insurance industry reveals a complex and rapidly evolving environment. While there are challenges and risks associated with each of the six factors, there are also significant opportunities for growth and innovation. Companies in the insurance sector must be proactive and adaptable in their responses to changes in the political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal landscape.

By leveraging their strengths, addressing their weaknesses, and embracing new trends and technologies, insurers can continue to provide essential protection and value to their customers while maintaining their competitiveness in a dynamic market.

Political Factors

Jordan has 10 million people in the Middle East. Jordan’s external environment, including political issues that affect economic growth and development. It can be examined using PESTEL. Due to significant unemployment and limited freedom of expression, this country is plagued by political instability. International relations dynamics, where regional powers have created an unpredictable geopolitical climate that could disrupt trade with important partners like the UAE and Saudi Arabia, also affect Jordan’s political scene.

Government policies also slow liberalization since bureaucracy hinders business decision-making in Jordan (Saikal et al., 2020). Therefore, investors may view operating costs in Jordan unfavorably compared to other countries globally because locally-based companies face significant administrative burdens when trying to fully engage their markets and are subject to laws set forth by these decision-makers despite possible overbearing effects on potential revenue streams.

Economic factors

Jordan’s emerging market economy has grown rapidly in the past decade. Jordan’s economy can be better understood using PESTEL analysis. Jordan’s diverse economy relies on US, German, and Japanese help and investments. To attract investment and create jobs, the government invests in education, healthcare, and transportation infrastructure. Its export-oriented manufacturing sector is a substantial contributor to GDP due to its advantageous location as a hub for trade and tourism.

Inflationary pressures from growing import costs raise consumer goods prices, and SMEs’ higher borrowing costs due to poor credit ratings hurt their financial stability. Recent policy reforms have reduced regulatory restrictions to encourage foreign investment, but potential barriers to starting new businesses or expanding existing ones still prevent SMEs from achieving sustainable growth targets.

Social factors

Social factors shape any nation’s commercial climate. Jordan needs PESTEL examination of numerous social factors. First, large population expansion may increase demand for products and services. However, youth unemployment is rising. To match market expectations, new jobs or education must be created. Second, Jordan’s location on ancient trade routes that connected Asia and Europe has made it a diverse society with many ethnicities and nationalities, which has both pros and cons.

Thirdly, urbanization and modernity have changed lifestyles, including diets that can cause childhood obesity (WHO statistics report). Businesses in Jordan’s social milieu must carefully negotiate these obstacles to prosper regionally or nationally(Albatayneh et al., 2022)

Technological factors

The Kingdom of Jordan, located in the heart of the Middle East, is a rapidly growing economy with significant technological advancements. The Technological factors play a vital role in determining the country’s competitive advantage and future growth potential. In terms of Infrastructure, Jordan has made considerable investments in modernizing its telecommunications network in recent years.

As per analysis, Mobility has become an integral part of Jordanian society as Smartphone penetration reaches over 50%. The government is committed to promoting IT development and attracting foreign investment through economic incentives like tax breaks for technology start-ups. Furthermore, E-commerce and Digitalization are emerging trends that have transformed trade practices and created new online marketplaces while also providing novel opportunities for small business owners to thrive on social media platforms.

However, cybersecurity remains an area where more work needs to be done as digital transformation creates new channels for cyber-attacks amid rising dependence on technology-based systems across sectors including financial services and healthcare domains.

Environmental factors

Jordan, a Middle Eastern nation, uses PESTEL to analyze environmental issues. Jordan faces water scarcity, desertification, deforestation, air pollution, and waste management. Climate change-related droughts and heatwaves worsen these environmental challenges. Poor infrastructure has made renewable energy sources harder to obtain, increasing hazardous gas emissions and air pollution, which harms local populations.

The government has responded by establishing new policies for conserving water resources, public awareness campaigns promoting sustainable farming practices, and other critical initiatives aimed at mitigating some of these challenges facing its ecosystem while initiating solutions to protect biodiversity in Jordan’s threatened ecosystems, including wetlands and forests essential for sustaining irreplaceable wildlife species within its borders (Abdoh et Thus, considering economic and environmental factors when doing business or investing in Jordan over time could improve sustainability standards in light of global climate change concerns.

Legal Factors

Legal variables define Jordan’s socio-economic landscape, therefore PESTEL analysis must include them. Commercial regulations in Jordan are crucial to enterprises and international investment. These laws govern financial transactions by enforcing contracts, transferring property rights, and resolving disputes. Jordan also protects patents, trademarks, and copyrights, unlike many other Middle Eastern countries.

Labor laws, which govern employment contracts including compensation, hours, and overtime leave, are another important consideration. It also respects workers’ right to organize unions, collectively bargain, and conduct industrial action when necessary while safeguarding their safety in dangerous working circumstances through occupational health standards compliance policies enforced by relevant authorities. Thus, local and international companies seeking to invest or enter Jordan’s growing markets must understand these legal factors.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the PESTEL analysis of Jordan reveals a complex and rapidly changing environment, with various opportunities and challenges. The country’s strategic location, diverse economy, and young population are significant strengths that can help it to navigate the challenges associated with each of the six factors.

At the same time, Jordan must be proactive in addressing weaknesses, such as high unemployment rates, limited natural resources, and political instability in the region. By leveraging its strengths and addressing its weaknesses, Jordan can continue to grow and succeed in a highly competitive global environment, improving the standard of living for its citizens and strengthening its position in the region.

Political Factors

Political issues in Sri Lanka had created major disruption to the different sectors of the economy. Even though MAS Holdings did not report any significant effect during the political instability, the high degree of unpredictability could become a challenge for the company. The political crisis in the country has created moderate business risk for the business.

The company holds a significant position in the apparel industry and contributes to the economic activity of the country. The management has tried to play a role in exerting pressure on the Sri Lankan government to restore the political stability and address the concerns of the protestors (Srinivasan, 2022).

Sri Lanka has developed positive trading relations with the different countries, allowing MAS Holdings to connect with its leading apparel brands across the world. The company has been able to achieve significant exports, being highlighted as the Export Conglomerate of the Year. The favorable trading policies of the government have supported in this achievement.

Economic Factors

The currency devaluation and rising inflation have been two of the major economic challenges that MAS Holdings has been facing in the country. The increasing prices of raw material, along with the higher cost of energy has made it difficult to continue with the production process without revising the prices.

Due to the high inflation, the company had to make cost related decisions and also keep the prices within a reasonable range to remain relevant for its target market. In addition, the compensation offered to the workers had to be increased considering the rise in inflation. These factors have accumulated into the lower profitability for the company.

Energy prices and energy supply has also been effected due to the country’s political uncertain climate as well as the Russia and Ukraine conflict. Moreover, COVID 19 had further pushed the country into economic slowdown. The management at MAS Holdings had to deal with the issues pertaining to supply disruption and the increased cost of manufacturing.

As a result, the company has decided to lay off its workers to curtail the effect of negative economic environment on the business profitability. The employees were offered a voluntary retirement scheme, through which up to 4% of the workforce was decreased in the company (Perera, 2022).

Social Factors

The apparel companies have to take the recent trends and preferences into view while designing and manufacturing the different products. MAS Holdings takes the consumer preference into view as the brands that are supplied the different apparel related products need to remain aligned with the social trends.

People have become more focused on active life style, increasing the demand of sportswear. This has encouraged the company to expand its operations beyond the lingerie segment and invest into the manufacturing of athletic wear. The products are available in the international market, such as US and European regions.

Another way that the company has been able to use social factors to its advantage is through adaptive wear category. Products in this segment were launched to address the needs of the people with disabilities, indicating its focus on inclusivity. Along with its partner firm Slick Chicks, MAS Holdings is creating products that are aligned with the needs of this niche market (Abdulla, 2021).

Pandemic has also influenced the company’s manufacturing decisions. The management has identified the expected increase in the demand of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) due to COVID. The operations have included the production of PPE and related apparel items to respond to the changes in the social dynamics.

Technological Factors

The availability of technology has supported MAS Holdings to produce apparel products that are in accordance to the quality standards and meet the expectations of the target market. For instance, Silicone Application technology allows the company to manufacture garments that bring comfort and quality to the users (MAS, 2023).

The company is using Artificial Intelligence tools to understand the needs and trends of the market and shape its operations accordingly. The use of AI is also evident in the design process as the digital twin (DT) technology helps the company to create improved collaboration with its partners. Technology has further benefited the company to maintain a high production capacity.

Legal Factors

The employment regulations are applicable on MAS Holdings, constituting the dimensions of worker recruitment, salary and equity. The company focuses on gender equality in the workplace and emphasizes on women’s empowerment, which is reflected through the 70% of the employees being females (MAS Holdings, 2021).

Furthermore, the company promotes the notion of meaningful employment through providing the workers with fair salaries and manageable work hours. The intellectual property laws are also relevant for the apparel manufacturer which offer the company protection against counterfeit products and maintain its position as a highly innovative organization.

Environmental Factors

Environmental factors are taken into consideration by the company throughout its operations. For instance, the production of fabric is using natural dye solution, to lower the harm caused to the environment by the chemical based dyes. The management is also shifting to renewable energy and better use of water as an indication of environment friendly business operations.

Currently, 57% of the energy being used by the organization is originating from renewable resources. MAS Holdings has also made its waste management process more eco-friendly and aims to improve the recycling initiatives further for solid and liquid waste. The company intends to rely on reuse or recycling processes for the non-toxic waste produced during operations (MAS Holdings, 2021).

Conclusion

The external environment for MAS Holdings is moderately favorable. There have been political issues and economic crisis in Sri Lanka that has negatively affected the company operations. However, the management has been able to respond to these threats effectively and retain a significant position in the apparel segment through innovation and eco-friendly initiatives.

Political Factors

The political factors play a major role in the global expansion decisions of restaurant companies such as Tim Hortons. Unstable political environment that threatens the stability of economic activity of a country is seen as an unfavorable factor. The management scans the external environment and opts for regions that are likely to provide positive growth opportunities.

The management has established its franchises in regions that provide political stability to lower the risk of political turmoil. Current plans of expansion include opening up of the franchises in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, which are deemed as having politically favorable climate for businesses (Tsuge, 2023).

The trading environment is also a factor that is effected by the political dynamics prevailing in a country. Trading barriers and unfavorable trading policies make it difficult for the company to procure raw material from the regions that are impacted by the restrictions. The supply chain decisions need to be made considering the trading environment and regulations.

The domain of tax is also related to the external environment of Tim Hortons as the management has to follow government directions pertaining to the taxation. According to the government regulations, the harmonized sales tax is applicable on the company products, effecting the prices offered to the consumers.

Economic Factors

The strong economic position of Canada has placed it among the top 10 economies in the world, due to the high GDP. At present, the GDP is $1.894 trillion, which indicates the growth prospects for the company. The pandemic has changed the economic dynamics of the country as businesses struggled to maintain profitability during the lockdown and social distancing rules.

Tim Hortons has faced significant financial loss due to the pandemic as there was a more than 13% decrease in the restaurant sales in Canada. The stores located in Ontario were major contributor to low sales as 50% of the brand’s outlets are located in the region (Lucas, 2021). The lockdown has resulted in limited number of people visiting the stores.

The post pandemic economic condition is also effecting the level of profitability of the company. Inflation, and price changes of raw materials have affected the operational cost. There has also been an increase in the wages of the workers, therefore, the management at Tim Hortons have to deal with the financial pressure from this aspect as well.

Social Factors

One of the social factors for Tim Hortons include the population growth which would support the organization in expansion of its market. The decision to enter into the specific US locations was supported by the high population in those areas, which is likely to promote high sales.

The main segment of the population that is the focal point of the company is people who are employed and consume coffee, donuts and other menu items while going to their workplace. Urban development is also a factor that contributes to the growth of the company as a larger number of people shift to urban locations, increasing the consumers.

The brand image in the market and consumer loyalty is another social factor which is relevant for its operations in Canada. The company is considered to be the most trustworthy brand in the region, indicating a higher degree of favorable attitude of the customers towards the restaurant as compared to its competitors (Siekierska, 2022).

Technological Factors

Tim Hortons has introduced the scan to pay option in its restaurants to make the process more convenient for the consumers. The app supports the integration of this option and allows the employees to improve service speed, specifically in locations that have a high number of visitors. A Tim card is provided to the users to manage their online payments.

The organization has also utilized social media to increase brand awareness and making better connection with the consumers. For instance, the trend of #ChillwithTims is aiming to support the restaurant in marketing its products through the customers who are encouraged to share their pictures with their menu items (Tim Hortons, 2013).

Legal Factors

Tim Hortons needs to follow the regulations related to franchise licensing and develop contracts according to the legal requirements. Along with that, the employment laws being practiced in the country where the restaurants are operating are applicable on the organization. For instance, in Canada, fair labor legislation guides the business practices towards employee salary.

The government has revised the wages of the employees, rising the amount which has affected the cost of labor for the company. Another way that legal factors contribute in shaping business practices is through the laws related to disabilities and discrimination. The restaurants have to ensure accessibility for the people with disability and avoid discriminatory work practices (Restaurant Brands International Inc., 2022).

The food safety and quality laws are also important part of the legal environment for Tim Hortons. The food that is being served to the consumer needs to be in line with the quality standards and quality inspection constitutes an integral part of business operations. For instance, Egg Quality Assurance certificate illustrates the management’s commitment to quality.

Environmental Factors

The company has made efforts to reduce plastic waste originating from its sandwich packaging by shifting to a more eco-friendly material. Moreover, the use of plastic straws by the company would be gradually emitted and the consumers will be offered paper straws as a replacement (Tim Hortons, 2021).
Another initiative in terms of food packaging was the use of coffee cup comprising 30% of the recycled material, lowering the impact of wastage on the environment.

Along with that the introduction of recyclable napkins and cup liners has been done. The management has also taken initiatives related to reduction of emissions and decreasing the water usage.

Conclusion

The external environment of Tim Hortons is offering it a favorable business environment as the company has stable political and economic dynamics. Despite the challenges of inflation and higher price the company has achieved high sales in the post-pandemic period. The use of technology has further helped the restaurant in marketing and brand building.

Political Factors

One of the ways political factors of a country effect businesses is through providing them with a stable business environment. In regions that experience intense conflict and political disturbances, organizations face difficulties in handling operations effectively. Businesses in Hong Kong have experienced the adverse effects from the protests in the city.

It has been reported that there were violent occurrences throughout the city between law enforcement and the public. These protests had slowed down the business activities in the region and disrupted the overall economic performance of the region. The social unrest had significant impact on the performance of all sectors, primarily the SMEs and retail sector (Toh, 2019).

Moreover, the trading difficulties between US and China arising out of the trade war between the two regions restricted the flow of goods and services. This combined with the effects of political turmoil had created an unfavorable environment for the export related activities in Hong Kong. The city has to deal with loss due to high tariffs and low trading opportunities.

The government regulations in Hong Kong pertaining to financial business set ups are strict, which makes it difficult for the organizations and startups. However, other businesses have been able to establish their operations in the city with relative ease. The low taxes also make it a favorable option for organizations.

Economic Factors

The economic condition in Hong Kong was also effected by the protests and social unrest in 2019. The impact of the instability was financially significant and the region reported economic slowdown, which has not been experienced in the last decade. The annual GDP declined while the retail sales have also indicated a downward trend due to lower spending (Lee, 2019).

The tourist segment was among the main contributors in the economic growth of the region. The violent situation in Hong Kong created a decline in the number of tourists, which in turn caused a decline of tourists from China. A large proportion of the tourists comprised of Chinese visitors and this decline had a negative effect on the overall economic stability.

Currently, the economy of Hong Kong seems to be progressing as growth of up to 5.5% is expected as the business activities would resume back to normal operations after COVID. Moreover, the inflation has not increased significantly, and unemployment ratio is also decreasing. These factors indicate positive recovery of the economy from pandemic effects.

The export sector is still facing some difficulties, however the growing Chinese economy is likely to have a positive effect on the region’s economic development. The three main areas that are expected to contribute in this regard as tourism, trade and real estate, thus making these industries a profitable venture for businesses.

Social Factors

The population in Hong Kong is decreasing and while the aging population is expanding. One of the reasons there was a change in the population statistics was the increase outflow of people to other areas. These population changes need to be considered while making business related decisions.

COVID and the strict restrictions on social interaction and traveling has caused a massive decline in consumer spending. The hospitality segment was impacted and some of the organizations such as Jumbo Kingdom had to stop their business operations (Wong, 2022). The retail organizations were also impacted by the pandemic and changing consumer behavior.

The consumers in the city have restricted their expenditure during the hostile situation in the city as the city was struggling to maintain economic stability. In addition, the pandemic further induced financial disturbances in the households. Due to the impact of pandemic on the Hong Kong economy and the economic downturn, consumer spending on retail has been low.

Technological Factors

Hong Kong has been able to establish itself as a technologically advanced and innovative region (Fung, 2022). Some examples of the technological advancements that have been the focal point include artificial intelligence and financial technologies. These domains have been changing the way businesses operates and the way the financial processes are being managed.

AI has particularly been integrated in the financial and e-commerce sector of Hong Kong. The technology is being used to manage trading and financial services. The technology also assists the employees in the banking segment to provide guidance to the customers based on the data analytics and its inferences. In addition, bio-technology is a growing tech segment in the region.

Legal Factors

The legal aspect of Hong Kong is supportive of business activities as it focuses on creating ease of trading and business for the organizations. The companies that have set up operations in the region have to follow the regulations imposed by the government. For instance, exports need to be made within the clearance guidelines.

Employment laws that are implemented in Hong Kong do not follow the similar pattern as followed by other countries such as the US. Organizations are not required to follow any specific criteria pertaining to work hours, however the leaves issued to the employees are specified in the legal framework.

Environmental Factors

There are different laws that have been developed to promote environment friendly behavior in the organizations. Some of these include air pollution control ordinance, Waste Disposal Ordinance and Hazardous Chemicals Control Ordinance etc. Environmental Protection Department is responsible for ensuring the implementation of sustainable practices.

Companies are encouraged to adopt eco-friendly business operations and EPD facilitates those process by providing the management with awareness about becoming green. It also provides all relevant stakeholders with information about environment laws and offers them compliance guides (Environmental Protection Department, 2023).

Conclusion

Hong Kong has been through political and economic issues that created a difficult business environment for its industries. At present the economic indicators of the country are progressing and the political scenario is somewhat stable. Furthermore, the region is recovering from effects of pandemic, therefore the external environment can be seen as moderately favorable.

Political Factors

The lack of political stability creates numerous issues for businesses as they find it difficult to handle the operations smoothly under such circumstances. India has been exposed to political instability caused by riots, ethnic and religious conflicts. Such political climate increases the risk of harm caused to the businesses as violence can be targeted at damaging company’s offices.

Corruption issues in India indicate that the companies faces threat of its employees participating in fraudulent activities. In one such case, a manager at the company was found to be participating in online sales of the stock that was supposed to be deposited back the company. Through this sales activity, the manager has sold committed fraud of around 40 lakh (The Times of India, 2020).

Taxation is also an important political factor that affects the organizations in the FMCG sector in India. Haldiram has to follow tax related regulations implemented by the government and components such as VAT constitute a part of its financial processes. Furthermore, export of its products is dependent on the trading relations of India with other regions such as US.

Economic Factors

The GDP of India has been suggesting positive economic growth over the years, however the recent pandemic has shifted the growth patterns. Due to the widespread impact of pandemic on different organizations, disruption of the economic activities in India was inevitable and the GDP growth rate has been compromised.

One of the implications of COVID on economy was high unemployment and poverty. These factors have affected the ability of the people to spend on snacks and other items that don’t constitute as basic commodities. Moreover, lower production in the factories due to labor shortages has also contributed to the slower growth of the company during COVID.

Inflation has caused a decline in the purchasing power of the people in India, while the management at Haldiram faces the issue of increasing prices of raw material (Malviya, 2020). Considering the lower buying power, the price increase of the product becomes more challenging as it would cause a lower demand in the market.

Due to these economic issues, the profit margin of Haldiram has not shown the increasing trend as expected. However, favorable economic growth is likely to benefit the company as the sales would increase. Economic prosperity would also lower the poverty level and improve the buying power of the market.

Social Factors

The population growth is a key contributing factor in the consumption of products related to FMCG industry. Haldiram can view the growing population in India as a favorable social factor as a higher number of people suggests a greater sales possibility for the company. The company can also gain a higher sales with the growth of the population in regions where it exports.

Changing social trends create social dynamics in which a company operates and they guide the business decisions. For example, the onset of COVID has seen nationwide focus on social distancing. Haldiram has emphasized on the safety of the consumers by investing in a #HaldiramsCare campaign.

Consumers of the company have shown a preference of local snacks and were more interested in purchasing locally produced savory snacks than the western brands available in the market. This inclination towards local products have worked in favor of the company as it has enabled the sales to increase up to $ 1 billion (Financial Express, 2020).

The increasing demand for healthy snacks is another way social trends tend to effect FMCG companies such as Haldiram. The management has recognized the need of the health conscious consumers and explored the options in the domain of related snacks. As a result of this analysis, the company has launched granola bars to keep relevant to this segment of the market (Shashidhar, 2021).

Technological Factors

The technology in production of food items is important in delivery quality products to the consumers. Haldiram is using advanced technology to manage the processes of spice blend making. In addition the manufacturing of different seasonings is also handled by the automated technology which has enabled the company to retain consistence and good quality of flavors.

Furthermore, the packaging processes are also made more efficient through the use of technology in the factories. The company has also benefited from the use of social media platforms to increase the brand awareness and reach its target market. The growth of internet users has allowed the management to expand its operations in the online domain as well.

Legal Factors

The company has to follow employment laws, aligning its labor management practices with the legal framework that defines the company’s policies and practices. Failure to follow the employment laws and mistreatment of the labor can lead to litigation and legal complications for the company.
Quality of the products needs to be maintained to avoid any legal issues. In addition, the copyright violations by other companies needs to be managed to maintain a strong brand image in the market. For instance, counterfeit product by Aahar Foods pushed Haldiram to file a case against the company (Gandhi, 2021).

Environmental Factors

The environmental concerns have pushed many companies in the FMCG sector to adopt eco-friendly practices. Haldiram has also been a part of this move towards sustainable business through its focus on CSR. The company has obtained LEED Platinum Certificate which implies the setting up of green buildings by an organization.

The management has also put efforts in improving the climate through initiatives such as “Seed To Sapling Program” which promotes planting greenery. In addition, Haldiram has indicated eco-friendly behavior through focusing on increased recycling activities along with lowering the amount of water usage in its factories (Haldiram’s India Pvt Ltd, 2023).

Conclusion

Haldiram is operating in a favorable business environment as the company has a significant market demand in India. The political and economic issues have caused temporary disruption in company operations, however, the present increase in sales indicates a positive outlook for the organization.

Grab is a part of the technology industry in Singapore, with operations in Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam etc. The company is mainly operating in 3 domains which include delivery, mobility and financial services. The PESTLE analysis of Grab would examine the different environmental factors and elaborate the influence of these factors on the company operations.

Political Factors

Political stability determines the degree of uncertainty a business would face in a country. Technology companies like Grab have to respond to the threat in the environment in the form of violent conflicts and may limit the operations to maintain safety. Furthermore, geo-political instability effects on fuel price which can become challenging for companies like Grab.

Government regulations that are in place to run the technology platforms that handle ride sharing and deliveries are another important political factor. Regulations such as interest rate adjustment effect the cost of operations of Grab. Furthermore, exchange rate and the level of control of the government in this domain effects the financial output of the business.

Decisions such acquisition, setting up terms and conditions of service and dealing with customers are developed within the government’s regulations. For instance, the acquisition of Uber’s Southeast Asian operations by Grab need to be handled within the regulations imposed by the government (Daga & Aravindan, 2018).

Economic Factors

The economic strength of a country can helps technology-based businesses to flourish and grow. The management at Grab decided to lay off some employees and reducing its cost of operations as a means of managing the impact of declining economic condition. The decision was taken as a means of countering the effect of continued loss being faced by the company (Poh & Lee, 2022).

Inflation effects the cost incurred by merchant-partner which effects the cost of running its different services. For instance, increasing price of fuel effects the cost of operations of the mobility segment, which leads to a higher fare being charged from the service users (Grab Holdings Limited, 2021).

A downfall of the increase fuel price and the resultant increase in fare is the decreasing demand of such service in the market. Due to inflation, people struggle to handle their expenses and the higher fares could be viewed as a challenge. Therefore, people could consider using alternatives, resulting in a decline in demand.

Social Factors

The pandemic had a negative impact on the revenues generated by Grab, specifically its mobility segment. Social distancing guidelines and travel restrictions limited the number of people using the mobility services, thus leading to lower profitability (Grab Holdings Limited, 2021). However, the food delivery aspect of the services gained an increase in the users.

This rise of online deliveries was attributed to the work from home and staying home precautions being followed by the public. Individuals were avoiding going out of home and showed a preference for home delivery, which was a positive outcome of COVID for Grab delivery.

Some countries have indicated a higher demand for motorcycle for mobility services while other regions have shown a comparatively higher user of cars. These changes in the use of vehicles and mode of transportation are linked to the level of development of a country. For instance, in Vietnam, people prefer to use motorcycle option in Grab due to ease of travel and affordability.

Technological Factors

The increase in technological innovation has opened up opportunities for app based ventures to enter the market. Grab as a part of the technology sector has gained immense benefit from the developments in technology. The company has been able to include different everyday services as a part of its operations through use of relevant technology.

Another one of the examples where technology has helped in improving safety is through inclusion of selfie feature for drivers and passengers in Malaysia. Facial recognition became more complicated during the pandemic as the drivers and riders were required to wear face masks.

However, availability of advanced AI has helped Grab in managing facial recognition even when the people were wearing face masks, maintaining safety (Tan, 2020). The company is also using technology to strengthen its cyber security and ensuring that the data of its customers remains safe. AI has been particularly helpful in tackling the issues in the domain of cyber security.

Legal Factors

The legal factors include the laws that govern each aspect of the company’s business operations. Since Grab is dealing with technology and app based services, it has to make sure that there are no fraud cases linked with its platform. Fraudulent activities through Grab were a key challenge for the company.

In order to deal with this issue, the management provides its customers with guidance about identifying potential scams. It also focuses on providing them insight into managing their account safety. Moreover, the company also has to follow anti-corruption laws, and has recently carried out an investigation about its internal anti-corruption situation.

In addition to this, app companies have to follow competition law and refrain from manipulative business practices. However Grab has not been fully complying with the competition law which has resulted in the legal penalty and fine on the company. The management was a part of application of restrictive clauses on the driver partners which was deemed as a violation of law (Lee, 2019).

Environmental Factors

The company has taken some steps to indicate its commitment to protecting the environment. Grab focuses on double bottom line, environmental performance being one of the aspects of its positive initiatives. The business operations are developed around the goal of decreasing the environmental footprint of the company.

One of the examples in this regard is the JustGrab Green option for ride booking. It allows the people to select eco-friendly vehicles for traveling, which is aiming to reduce the transportation related carbon emissions linked with the delivery segment of the business (Grab Holdings Limited, 2021).

Conclusion

Grab has greatly benefited from the technological advancements. However political issues such as geo-political disturbances, increasing fuel price, pandemic relates changes in consumer demand are some of the factors that have negatively affected the company’s revenues.
